EsserHow did your love of Joe Meek come about?
Esser: I heard a Tornadoes record and loved the feeling and sounds in the music. I found out that Joe Meek had produced it and started looking at other records he’d made. His approach to recording and capturing sounds was revolutionary and it was really inspiring hearing about the way he worked. I think Telstar is Margaret Thatchers favourite song, which is weird……

Has he been your biggest inspiration in wanting to get into music?

I think his warped view of pop music is a massive influence on the way I work. I got into music though just because I enjoyed it. I never wanted to replicate or emulate anyone.

With the current wide-spread use of MySpace, would you say that the digital boom has helped you or made it harder in developing your art?
I think people are able to hear about something instantly nowadays. I put my first demos up on MySpace and that was definitely the thing that triggered peoples' interest. It used to be that you could make two albums before anyone really knew who you were. Which was great because artists had time to grow. Now you have to have ‘hits’ on your first record. I think record labels need to nurture artists more.

What was it like working with the Lexxx?  Do you find working with producers easy?

Working with Lexxx was amazing. He really helped me make the record that I wanted to make and I think generally it was just a bit of an adventure. I think initially I found it hard working with producers because im very precious about my music. Its about having the trust in someone to let them change parts for the better.

You grew up listening to UK garage, as did I!  What effect do you think this has had on your music…..if any?
I still listen to UK garage! I guess I was just really into the rhythms and the bass lines because they drew from music that I was into. I do think its had an influence on my music in someway. Maybe Creeds vocal style….

You were in LadyFuzz for a little while too; what made you decide to go solo?
I’d always been writing songs and making my music on the side so it was just a natural step really. That and a massive ego.

Who are you currently listening to?
Twistin The World Around by the Twistin Kings

The music industry can be ridiculously tough on the struggling artist; what has been your main motivation?
Just fame really. I’d really like to be on I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here……maybe do a butter advert.

You have a very interesting style.  Where do you most of your ideas come from?
Most of my ideas come from global concerns. Environmental issues, world piece. Just uniting people through music really.

You’ve just finished a tour with Bloc Party, Kaiser Chiefs & Foals.  What would you say are the best and worst things about going on tour?
It’s amazing just playing to different people every night. I do start to get sick of travel lodges after a while though.

What’s next for Esser?
