Danny (The Red Hearts)

Danny, the bassist from The Red Hearts gives us the low-down on what albums tickle his fancy....

Flamin' Groovies - Teenage Head (1971, Kama Sutra)
In my mind one of the few perfect albums ever recorded. I first got into the Groovies in high school after learning that they were an early influence for the Clash's Mick Jones. This album is during the bands 'heavier' period with Roy Loney on vocals; after his departure the band went in a more pop direction recording songs like "Shake Some Action" which is a classic in itself. I've had the honor of meeting both Roy Loney and Cyril Jordan in the last few years and they have some great stories and are still able to play!

Jay Reatard - Blood Visions (2006, In the Red)
I first heard Jay with his work in the Lost Sounds (I missed his Reatards phase, though I like them now) and he has been one of my favorite artists since then. This album has been in constant rotation on my cd player and ipod since it came out in 2006. It's also on my favorite label, In the Red, which has released many of my favorite albums of the last five years (Black Lips, Demon's Claws, the Ponys).

The Muslims - s/t (2008, 1928 Records)
The Muslims self-titled EP came out at the beginning of this year and it's great. I first heard these guys at a house party we played with them after Fuck Yeah Fest last year and they played in the dark in a little room with a ceiling too low to contain Lenny Pop's (Red Hearts singer/guitarist) hair. They are now full on rock'n'rollers and pack every venue they play around Los Angeles. Also there LP covers were individually shot by police officers!!

Carbonas - s/t (2006, Raw Deluxe)
I must admit I am a bit of a vinyl record nerd, and I have a ton of records spanning the last five or six decades. One of my favorite recent records is Atlanta, GA's Carbonas vinyl only self-title second album. It is a quick blast of trashy punk rock and one of my favorite records to spin. The Carbonas have two other albums (both of which I believe are also self-titled) but this is my favorite.

V/A - Messthetics Greatest Hits (2006, Hyped2Death)
A great collection of unknown DIY post-punk bands from the late 70s early 80s European scene. There are some real classics on this album, especially the Tronics' "Shark Fucks" and Steve Treatments' "Change of Plan." Every track on this is an unknown gem, and these bands have spawned a cool new scene of lo-fi punkers here in 2008 America, with Times New Viking, Psychedelic Horseshit, and Christmas Island all claiming some of these bands as influences.
