 Another fashion company of musical note, Built by Wendy (which was, well, built by Wendy) showed signs of its potential when the aforementioned seamstress began selling handmade clothes to record stores in Chicago, Minneapolis and Kansas City, before moving to New York and selling clothes in the back of the record stores at which she worked. Nifty! In her spare time, Wendy Mullin (to use her full name) also designed costumes for and styled music videos: even niftier! When the masses went wild for her guitar straps, she began wholesaling her collection worldwide and, hey presto! She was soon able to open up her very own store, in the heart of NYC's Little Italy. Several more openings followed, more tongues were a-wagging and we here at Weluvmilk became rather enamoured ourselves of the Built by Wendy Fall 2008 womenswear collection.
Autumn was definitely in mind when this line was dreamed up. Muted colours and rustic fabrics, burnt oranges, corduroy and dressage garments conjure up spectres of country walks, heaps of leaves ripe for kicking, red apples and spice and all things twilight-of-the-year. If you like the seasonal sunset look, be inspired by She and Him's Zooey Deschanel, pictured here in a press shot for the duo's debut album Volume 1. Her country-style American prairie dress, complete with girlish ruffles, captures perfectly the faded and sun-dappled Autumnal feel, the warm tones and reflective nature, of the album. As does this beautiful Built by Wendy 'Solstice minidress', which manages to channel hippy and city-sleek at the same time. Yes: at the same time, people.
